Hi, I'm Maike!
I'm a Positive Psychology Lecturer and Practitioner, Behaviour Change Expert, and qualified Coach. I hold a Master's Degree in Psychology specialising in Health and Organisational Psychology; and, my PhD examined effective behaviour change strategies for organisations. Importantly, I know through all my studies, research, work and life experience that happiness can be learnt and success achieved - through the practice of self-leadership.
For as long as I can think, I've had a fascination with the fact that some people seem to thrive in life, while others go from one hurdle to another. It's what drove me to study Psychology, where I specialised in talent management and health behaviour change. I later undertook a PhD at The University of Queensland in Brisbane, Australia, where I still contribute to research, student supervision and lecturing as an Honorary Fellow. However, over the years, I became increasingly dissatisfied in my job roles. Something was missing, yet I didn't know what it was. So one day, I sat down, took pen and paper, I wrote down everything that had fascinated me about psychology and behaviour change science. I realised 3 things:
I loved positive psychology! The science of human flourishing, it completely aligned with my early fascination and was the reason I went to uni! However, being the youngest subdiscipline of psychology, I was never able to study it back in the days, because it wasn't offered at any university outside the USA (it barely is to this day!).
Self-leadership offered the framework I had been looking for my entire life. While positive psychology offers many different concepts about human flourishing, self-leadership offers a guiding framework about what to do if you want to become a stringer self-leader. Yet, how I managed to stumble across the self-leadership literature is even a mystery to myself, which brings me to the third point.
Self-leadership was is dire need of input from positive psychology. Interestingly, both disciplines were conceptualised around the same time - roughly four decades ago, but self-leadership arose form the business literature - and somehow had remained there ever since. So, I made it my mission, to complement one with the other and create a powerful self-leadership framework for human flourishing. Sound good?
In 2017, I created an evidence-based self-leadership course, which I facilitated self-leadership both as a workshop and retreat in Brisbane and the Sunshine Coast in Australia. I am now making it available internationally as an online program called FRESH START. And, I created this self-leadership blog, social media accounts, newsletter, and digital resources. I am also now working with the leading self-leadership researchers to create SELF-LEADERSHIP 2.0.
Frankly, I am on a mission to support anyone who would love to go on a personal growth journey and create the life of their dreams to accomplish that. That's what makes my heart sing. While I've managed to realise a lot of my own dreams, I still dream of sailing the world with my family one day.
These days, I am also a qualified Coach in neuro-linguistic programming (NLP) and acceptance commitment training (ACT) for workplaces, a writer at PositivePsychology.com and a Positive Psychology Practitioner (School of Positive Transformation, USA). Over the last 15 years, I worked as a project manager, tutor and regular guest lecturer, workshop facilitator, international speaker, consultant and research fellow (you can connect with me on LinkedIn here).
